Insider / workplace violence

An employee, ex-employee, or insider becoming threatening or violent.

What it looks like

  • Escalating threats, intimidation, or talk of revenge
  • A recently terminated or aggrieved person returning
  • Coworkers expressing fear of a specific individual

Before — design it out

  • Take reported threats seriously; have a reporting path and EAP
  • Manage access for departing employees promptly
  • Train managers to spot and escalate concerns early

During — what staff do

  • Separate the person from others; don't corner them
  • Call 911 if there's a weapon or imminent harm
  • Lock down or evacuate per the situation; document everything
