Tailgating at entry
Slipping in behind a credentialed person — the #1 access failure indoors.
What it looks like
- Someone catching the door behind a guest or badge-holder
- Riding the elevator up without checking in
- Hovering at the desk to blend into a group
Before — design it out
- One person, one scan/check — no holding the door
- Staff the entrance so no one walks past unverified
- Friendly script: 'I just need to check you in real quick'
During — what staff do
- Politely intercept and route to check-in
- Don't accuse — verify
- If they can't be verified, hand to the safety lead
Remember the spine. Notice → report quietly → let trained security assess. For immediate danger, call 911 first.
