Crowd crush / panic
Dangerous density or a sudden rush toward exits — often the deadliest risk.
What it looks like
- Pinch points where flow stops and density builds
- A surge or stampede toward one exit
- People unable to move freely or being pressed
Before — design it out
- Manage capacity and keep multiple exits open and visible
- Avoid single choke points; widen and staff flow paths
- Never let one exit become the only obvious way out
During — what staff do
- Open and point to additional exits; spread the flow
- Calm, clear instructions — reduce the trigger for the rush
- Get downed people up and out of the press immediately
